This week, Kathryn touched on the following decorating, interior design and home renovation topics:

How can I decorate with the color of the year for 2017?

Jen from Logan Square, Chicago

We are moving from the grey of times past and moving towards warmer colors.  People are trying to get charm and coziness back into homes. The open floor plan is shifting towards “smaller” rooms that use darker colors.  For many, the color of the year is Benjamin Moore’s Shadow (2117-30) which is a dark color with purple and grey undertones. Dark colors work well in smaller spaces like powder rooms.

Pantone’s Greenery (15-0343) is considered another color of the year for 2017.  Don’t pair this color with Benjamin Moore’s Shadow.

Honeyglow is another color that is becoming popular among many of the designers.

These 2017 color trends show how people are wanting more complicated colors and warmth in their space.

Are there rules for color placement?

Dave, from Wilmette, IL

Oh yes!  Look at your home in terms of architectural masses.  Big and bold walls usually deserve a big and bold colors.  Also, be careful with changing colors on outside corners of a home, it will make Kathryn unhappy.  You don’t want a grumpy designer, do you?  Finally, don’t be afraid to use two different colors in a hallway.

My Contractor wants to use Flat paint everywhere, help?

Beth, Bucktown, Chicago, IL

Contractors will usually paint with flat paint because it’s easier to touch up and it’s more forgiving at hiding bumps and cracks in the drywall.  That doesn’t mean that you should.  We typically recommend using an Eggshell in most rooms and Satin/Semi-Gloss Sheen in bathrooms.  We will use a Semi-Gloss in closets to help protect the walls. I have a 8’x8′ spare bedroom/office, what are some tips for decorating a small space?

Jesse

When you have a small room, go big!  Think big artwork or big mirrors.  We know it seems counterintuitive, but taking a bold move helps make the room feel larger.  Also, use interesting and bold pieces of furniture.  Horizontal lines also help make the space feel bigger along with angling chairs and tables in corners.

What should I spend money on if I have kids and pets, I don’t want to purchase pieces that they will destroy in 3 seconds?

Emily

Pick medium to dark upholstery with a pattern that will help to hide spills and stains.  Sticking to metal or acrylic coffee tables and end tables wear a bit better than wood. If you have small children, look into ottoman benches with rounded corners to help prevent them get hurt.

How do I brighten up my interior office and make it feel like I have some natural light.  I already have bright green paint but have 6 bright fluorescent tube lights.

Patrica from Facebook

Add layered lighting.  Desk lamps, floor lamps all help create varying levels of lighting while adding visual interest.  Mirrors also help reflect the natural light in the room (assuming there is any) and add visual interest to the walls.
