Rustic Modern Living Room Loft in Chicago

This Chicago bachelor had a pretty bland living room with under-scaled furniture that was worn and outdated. The good news is that the foundation of this amazing loft provided the perfect canvas to design a beautiful rustic modern living room and dining room.

For this living room, we were inspired by the natural materials found in this timber loft and wanted to use that inspiration to create a space that used other natural materials.

Start With Seating

Because our client wanted a place to relax after long hours at the office, we started by designing a space that had a large and comfortable sectional sofa.

Add In The Tables

We selected accent tables (e.g. Coffee Table, End Table and Sofa Table) made from wood and metal, materials found throughout the loft.

Living Room Loft Lighting Can Be Tricky

Lighting in loft spaces is tricky because of the size of the space, smaller windows and darker materials (e.g. brick walls, dark wood floors and high wood ceiling). To address this, we developed a lighting plan that featured ceiling lights in key spots along with plenty of floor and table lamps.

Storage for Living Room Lofts is Critical

Along the Eastern wall underneath the windows we added multiple free standing bookshelves. The open shelves and repetition of the pieces allow for a large amount of storage and offer a space to showcase accessories.

Big Art for a Big Room

Kathryn Cherne from Design Inside created a large custom art installation which adds a splash of color and texture for the dining area

Sometimes, Function is More Important Than Form

Typically, we try to hide large HDTV’s in cabinets when possible to avoid having it become the first thing you see in a space. However, there are times when we have to mount it right on the wall. In those situations, we love to accessorize it with a bold media cabinet.

If you are in a similar situation, make sure you check out our guide for picking the right size 4K HDTV for your living room.
