The Ultimate Guide to Adding Art to Your Home

If you ask me, no home is complete without a piece of art, or multiple pieces. It’s not just about hanging things on those blank walls so they don’t seem as bland. It’s about adding the finishing touches to your home. Today we will be answering all the questions you have about incorporating art into your home decor. But first...

Why Do You Need Art In Your Home?

Art is such a great way to tie your design together and elevate it. I like to think of it as jewelry for your home. Depending on how you finish it off, the entire look will change. You’ve probably noticed that walking into a room with blank walls feels somewhat wrong. It’s as if something’s missing.

From a design perspective, your space rarely looks finished without artwork and accessories. You wouldn’t leave the house for a party looking all dolled up without jewelry and a cute pair of shoes, would you? Exactly.

How Does Art Impact Your Home Design?

Art adds a lot to the space. It has so much value and not just monetary. If you have been exposed to artwork, you’ve probably noticed that each piece of art makes you feel a certain way. Some of them are peaceful and restful, others can be stimulating and engaging. It’s all about the direction of lines and the composition.

Another way art can transform your space is through its color. Your home has a specific aesthetic and color palette. Using an art piece that matches that palette will unify your design and enhance it. Not to mention that art pieces can be a great conversation starter. I don’t know about you, but whenever I walk into someone’s home and they have an art piece on display, I know that there’s a story behind it and I want to hear it!

Think of your travels. My favorite art finds are those I purchase on vacation. They not only capture the space I was in but they are a constant reminder of that great adventure.

How & Where Can You Find Art?

There are different ways to approach your hunt for art. The aim of my work with clients is to finish off the space and embellish it with art, so we don’t approach it from a collector’s perspective. It’s more of a “gold is where you find it” kind of approach. Target and Etsy are usually great resources. I also recommend Art.com and Left Bank Art.

For our clients who are looking to collect artwork or have custom pieces commissioned, we will typically pair up with an Art Consultant like our friend and longtime partner, Daniel Kinkade, to help find truly one-of-a-kind pieces. If that’s what you’re looking for, just ask!

What to Choose and How to Display It?

Ah, the ultimate question - what do I choose?

When it comes to art, I would definitely recommend going with your heart. If you see an art piece that speaks to you, there’s a reason for that. Just get it!

However, if you want to be design-conscious and harmoniously incorporate art in your home, I would say go for the large pieces. Our favorites are 4’ x 4’ or larger! Sounds large, but trust me, it changes your space for the better. Also, if you decide to frame a canvas, just splurge and go for the “reveal” finish. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

If you’re gonna be shopping for frames, black or white with a matte finish are classic. You can have that gallery wall in your home for decades, and it will never go out of style. But be careful about not opting for a frame that’s more interesting than the artwork. You don’t want to pull focus from your art piece.

Final Thoughts..

Shopping for art is not as complicated as you may think. Just keep your design goals and color palette in mind, and you will never look at a blank wall the same way again.
